- These essays were very popular. Some papers began republishing the essays without permission. Johnson advertised that he would do the same to authors that did so...and give the proceeds to prostitutes in need.

- Since this is in the news today, see a modern, literal account from a soldier.
- No. 22: "Vulture"; this essay may have been suppressed from early book collections due to its strong criticism of war.
- The Replacement, "Imprisonment of Debtors," is perhaps even more pointedly critical of his own culture and sends forth a cry Dickens would later answer in novel form.

- No. 60 pt. 1 "Minim": this essay criticizes literary critics. It was used in the AP Literature exam in recent years.
