College Essays: Prunedale Promise

Tell us about the neighborhood that you grew up in and how it helped shape you into the kind of person you are today.

Growing up in a small town, with a population of 16,432, can seem a little boring. In fact, many see the “unincorporated community of Prunedale” as a small community divided by highway 101. Many people in the Bay Area drive through Prunedale every day and never see its real beauty; instead they glance at a passing shopping center and gas station. What so many people fail to see or experience, when in Prunedale, is the town’s small community landscape, feel, and country hospitality.

As a young child, growing up, Prunedale was perfect for me. You could own a house and keep your privacy; your dogs never had to be on leashes; and your property took on your own personality. The town also provided a hidden gem—Manzanita Park dedicated to baseball players, soccer players, runners, horse enthusiasts, and motor ex-daredevils. In Prunedale, Manzanita was the local hotspot, the heart of the community, and where I spent most of my free time.

When I was not playing soccer, I would unwind with friends. My house was thick with brush and trees to climb, hide, or build forts in. Others' backyards proved to be giant eucalyptus forests perfect for exploration and countless hours spent running around. Some backyards hosted great dirt hills with little entrances to manmade caves were we would build forts and play Indiana Jones inspired games. Every day in Prunedale was an adventure. Growing up in such a large playground provided me with the skills to overcome any obstacles, to challenge myself in new and interesting ways, and to just
enjoy life. Even now, as I drive to and from work, friend’s houses, school, and countless appointments, I’m challenging myself to new adventures and seeking new thrills.

My community—with its diverse environment challenged me to seek a higher level of performance. As a young child I sought to do the impossible and defy the ordinary. Now I apply those skills to my schoolwork, friendships, jobs, and athletic training. My community has helped to shape me into a strong, determined individual; I reflect Prunedale.
