Earthquake Drill

Follow the following procedures when exiting the building:

During the Drill

Via pubic announcement (PA) system, alarms or verbal direction (in the event of a real earthquake your signal will be the beginning of the shaking itself)

  • Announcement the earthquake drill has begun and to Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
  • While dropping under a sturdy desk or table, students and teachers look around at what would be falling on them in a real earthquake.  These items should be secured or moved after the drill.
  • 40 second audio earthquake effect will commence.
  • At the completion of audio effect, there will be an announcement the earthquake is over and classes will commence evacuation.
  • Implement school disaster plan.  Teachers, students and staff follow evacuation procedures according to disaster drill protocol.

Faculty Disaster Drill Protocol: High School Evacuation for Earthquake Disaster

  • Use the classroom evacuation map and proceed to the assigned drill location. Everyone is to stay together and to quickly and quietly evacuate: 4 Evacuation Rules- Don’t Talk, Don’t Push, Don’t Run, and Don’t Turn Back.
  • Teachers bring up the rear, seeing that everyone is together. Close classroom door, bring the MVC Crisis Management booklet and roll sheet.
  • Check exit routes are clear. Move directly away from the building when exiting.
  • Once in the assigned drill location (see classroom evacuation map), take roll and account for all students then proceed to the quad (high school) or amphitheater (middle school).  For Oct. 16 drill, faculty teaching in the middle school are to follow middle school evacuation procedures then join the high school at the quad.
  • Teachers disburse their students according to grade level (see diagram in Crisis Management booklet, p.6).  Students remain in grade level consolidation areas and await further instructions.
  • High School teachers report attendance to the Administrator located at the Gazebo and then proceed to the quad perimeter to supervise students by keeping them quiet in their designated areas.
  • Once all the teachers and students have been accounted for, the Administrator will announce the conclusion of the drill.  A PA announcement will confirm, and then teachers will guide students back to classrooms.
